Mockingjay - Part 2, the final film in the Hunger Games series, hits theaters next month, and what better way to celebrate one of the series' most fabulous characters than with an over-the-top costume this Halloween?
Effie Trinket, played by Elizabeth Banks, is just as memorable as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) herself—perhaps even more so thanks to her ridiculously intricate outfits and dramatic Capital-style makeup. As tricky as her look may seem to recreate, all you need is a mix of makeup tools, a little glue, and an awful lot of butterflies.
YouTube makeup guru Charisma Star offers a step-by-step list of ways to go from average citizen to Capital beauty in the following video tutorial on Effie's butterfly look from Catching Fire.
Start things off with a covering of very light foundation, lighter than you would typically use for your skin tone to ensure you achieve a pale glow. Then, adorn your eyelids with yellow eyeshadow, layering darker shades of yellow such as gold over this first application to make the color pop.
Once your eyes are as colorful as can be, line the upper and lower rims with regular black eyeliner. Then, if you'd like to amp up your lashes, add false lashes (Charisma recommends adding two layers, one traditional and one created with decorations to make the look even more dramatic).
Finally, finish your Effie adornments by adding any extra butterflies you'd like with makeup glue. Remember, nothing about Effie's look is normal or subtle—bigger is better, and the more colorful your appearance, the more believable you'll be.
To fill out the outfit, you'll need to get a wig that looks like her Effie's hairstyle, as well as the butterfly hat and butterfly dress. If you can't find the butterfly apparel at a local Halloween costume shop, you can try to DIY it yourself using crafts butterflies with the following video references.
